It takes a muslim village......

You know the expression;"it takes a village to raise a child"..but what about a muslim child? I think it takes a muslim village. How about kids growing up overseas cut off from their extended families back home and cut off from other muslim families because they are racist and exclusive? How about kids cut off by their non-muslim relatives in the case of converts? How about muslim kids growing up with no muslim people around because they are not in a big city? How do parents cope? Anyone else going through this? What advice do you have? To tell you the truth I'm tired of being a one woman show! This is too much burden for me. How can I be a shepherd without any help whatsoever? I can't even do little things like teach my kids quran because no one has taught me! I need a sea change, I need it now. I need my muslim village NOW!

  1. Yes and no. I have one neighbor and a few friends, which I can't get to all the time, no relatives either. I feel very bad that they are not experiencing whole-Islamic life an a daily basis--I can't even get to the masjid to make it a regular thing for them. Inshallah, Inshallah...
Can we get our husband to move closer to each other and start a neighborhood? Racism/bias stinks. I had to persevere with my neighbor, and be patient (converts are ignorant bias).
    I hear you!
I wish my daughter was of writing age, we can set up a penpal thing.

  4. The closest mosque is 45 minutes away and they refuse to teach adults quran. I've been waiting for 10 yrs.

I think about this often. In America there just doesn't seem to be this type of community, unless you are in big cities with support groups like the bay area, toronto, etc.

I try to do with what I have. Alhamdulillah, for the first time we live in an apartment here in the midwest with a lot of Muslim neighbors. Even if others won't consider the impact they can have on my children, I try to consider the impact we can have on theirs.

We live in a time where we see children outside doing things that shouldn't be done and people just minding their own business, for example. We should be in each other's business because we take our job seriously as a community... we are not just individuals who think only about ourselves.

There are many online resources for learning Qur'an. SeekersGuidance.org offers a tajweed course that is really good. I would recommend it. I've been thinking about setting up a blog for Arabic learning, to also help me with my own studies. INshaAllah soon.

    Thanks for your advice!

I checked out the site and the course but I can't figure out how they teach it. Do you know? Is it like something you can see or do you take out your own quran and read along. It doesn't even give you a free trial lesson or show you how the course looks. Yikes it starts tomorrow too! It looks good from what I can tell though. Its also cheaper than aalim.com which I was looking at.

Alhumdullilah you live in a place with lots of muslim neighbours.

The lessons are in recorded files that you listen to and then a live lesson weekly. Ustadh Mohamed is really good masha'Allah. You can use your mic or call into the class via a phone number for the live sessions. I highly recommend it... insha'Allah I'd like to sign up for the 2nd one... did the first but need to do the second (which is more detailed from the first). If you already know your basics then you can just go to the 2nd inshaAllah.

Subhan-Allah, I was just thinking of you today and came on to send you a message. I'm sorting through some stuff I found a couple of children's books with hadeeth and du'a in Arabic, English and Bahasa Malaysia. Wondered if you'd like them for your kids - e-mail me your address and I'll send them to you in sha Allah.
About the flying solo thing, I've BTDT for nearly ten years in the past, in a place with insular ethnic communities, racist neighbours, no support system and no internet. It was rather unpleasant to say the least. I fixed it by moving, alhamdulillah. That wasn't easy at times either, took a while to find my place in a new country. It's not perfect by any means, but much, much better than where I was before. I hope you can find a solution soon iA. Take care

Yes he contacted me and they have males only so he told me to contact SunniPath. I get their emails all the time but didn't realize they taught quran. They always feature other courses in their emails. Their tajwid course for females began last saturday.

  13. "All of you are shepherds and each of you is responsible for his flock. The Leader of people is a guardian and is responsible for his subject. A man is the guardian of his family and he is responsible for them. A woman is the guardian of her husbands home and his childreen and she is responsible for them. The servant of a man is a guardian of the property of his master and he is responsible for it. Surely, every one of you is a shepherds and responsible for his flock". (Sahih Bukhari 6719, Sahih Muslim 1829).
