Of Hockey and Hijab - Book Review

I finished this book a little while ago. Better late than never.

This book is a series of newspaper editorials by the author compiled from the last 10 yrs. Unless you were buried under a rock these topics will be old news to you. It was like a trip down memory lane, a depressing one as most news is about muslims. I think this would be a good book to read for new converts to get caught up with what has been happening to muslims in this last decade. It would also be good for teen and young adults since they would have been to young to remember many things. The author doesn't talk much about her past regarding hockey and I was hoping for more of that. If you are looking for something light to read this is not it but for something more in-depth then pick this up.

  1. Assalamualaikum.
I picked up this book from our local library as the title was just so captivating to me at least. I have always been amazed by how hockey brings Canada together. A book about hockey & hijab had to be good.
I specifically enjoyed reading the section that adress the multiculturism in Canada and how the Muslim culture plays into that. I am a Malaysian and am familiar with multi ethnicity and religious interaction between people and was able to grasp the ideas put forward by the author.
I do also realize that many of my Muslim brothers and sisters here in Canada originally come from very monogenous societies. I find it that it is a challenge to interact with this group even for myself as a Muslim. It is almost that many live dual lives sliding between a Canadian and a Muslim lifestyle. Truly we can have both.
I hope more writers like Seema Khan will address and help shape an all new Canadian Muslim identity Insha-Allah.
