Dream Jilbab

Alhumdullilah I'm slowly trying to wear jilbab. Problem is I only own 3 and besides the denim one I'm not so crazy about the other two. I've been looking on the net for my dream jilbab. Number one it has to be nursing friendly (like looking for a needle in a haystack). 2. It has to be in a nice colour, please no black or olive. Number one choice would be purple. Other pastel colours will do too. 3. It should have a hood. 4. It should be available from Canada. 5. It should be a-line so its easy to walk in. 6. It should be lightweight for the summer.

The choices available usually are black, black and more black. Or then there are the urban jilbabs which must be designed for teens because there are never any maternity or nursing ones. (by the way there are teen muslim moms so these should be revamped as well!) There are also jilbabs that are too tight to walk in. There are also too many polyester jilbabs although cotton is finally coming on to the scene. And why are all the button down or zipper jilbabs in dark dreary colours. The pretty colours are only for non-mothers I guess. Once you have a kid you have to dress in depressing colours. Who comes up with these rules? It reminds me of Malaysia when I was trying to find size 10 shoes; the biggest I could find was size 8 or 9 and they were all ugly. No cute colours, styles or flower decorations. So moms with big feet have to dress frumpy ok, got that?

  1. haha I think they make what sells the most and a lot of people generally like black, but yeah there is not much choice and it's hard to find one that fits well.. a lot of the ones I have are too big and I always trip on them and stuff.. I have one that fits perfectly.. I'm thinking of trying to copy it to make others

  2. I totally understand. I've modified my favorite jilbab by putting a zipper down the front so I wear this one most of the time. I have a button down dark green which doesn't look so good and a button down beige which is nice but a little tight on the shoulders so I can't really wear it. I bought a orangy red one that was long enough for my height but its so huge - are tall women all overweight? This one I only wear when I'm big and preggo like now.
Well good luck with your search!

  3. Seriously! You know, I thought there was hope until you mentioned it has to have a hood! Ha! Good luck!
Why don't you hire your daughter? Mashallah, she sews really well, and you'll get exactly what you want. Or save your money for tailored jilbab next time you get to go to Malaysia... Would it be feasible, with husband, to wear a long khimar that will cover you to your waist? You could easily make one with nice colors and use a contrasting headband or pin a fabric flower to cute it up a bit? It would be very easy to nurse under and would cover your curvy parts.
Meanwhile I too am waiting for nice, grown up woman sized jilabs in light and pretty colors. (as much as I like black...)

  5. My daughter unfortunately doesn't like sewing although she does it from time to time. Make it in Malaysia..hmmm..maybe but they are more used to baju kurung and kebaya..sometimes even abaya but since no one really wears jilbab there, I'm not to sure anyone would sew one. Right now I am wearing a waist-length khimar. (maxi tudong). I wish I could sew. I took lessons but I really didn't do well and have zero patience. So frustrating.

  6. Assalamu Alaikum,
I may be able to help. I have a moroccan style abaya/jilbab in a wine/light burgundy colour that was given to me. It is brand new and never worn. It has buttons all up and down the front so it is great for a nursing mum. Depending on what size you are looking for, I would be more than willing to mail it to you. You can get in touch with me via email if you wish: montrealmum@hotmail.com
Insha'allah it will work for you, Sis Elysia

  7. I'm afraid I kinda gave up on jilbab b/c I could no longer find any that weren't straight-up-and-down-designed-for-model-thin-types, plus which I looked pregnant in them and I got SO many rude comments and invasive questions (from "sisters") that I was in danger of doing or saying something I would later regret (or maybe not... heh!).
Not to mention that they almost *never* have my size and I hate polyester with a vengeance. And for the longest time all the jilbabs I see don't really cover. I'm better off in a dress or skirt and top plus a jacket.
So if you ever do find this dream jilbab and they come in *all* sizes, please let us know!

  9. Wa Alaikum Salaam

    Thanks for the link.
I checked it out and those are abayas not jilbabs. The styles are quite wild too. You can get away with it in Malaysia but in Canada people will have a heart attack! Also they have no buttons or zipper openings.
