Storage and home decorating

Lately I've been thinking about these two things. I just bought wooden hangers which have holes in them to hang up scarves; what a great invention. Also milk bag organizers for the fridge. I got these from a store called solutions in the GTA. Never seen anything like these around these parts that's for sure. But now my mind had moved on to something that's been bothering me for years. I want my windows to have privacy but want to let in the light. For some reason I just don't trust shears but one person swears by lace ones. What do you think? I've been looking at window wallpaper which lets in the light but gives you privacy and also roller blinds. Shears would be the cheapest  idea but which ones can I trust? I have issues with the neighbours so this is a big problem.

  1. I just visited my girlfriend the other day. Her front door is a half window...and it was the same thing for them, she wanted the privacy. She put on that leaf film that you have linked there, and if I didn't KNOW she'd done it I would have thought that was the way the window came. It was gorgeous! Go for it!

  2. I like it too. The only problem is the cost. To cover all the sliding doors would cost a fortune compared to shears so I'm hemming and hawing about that but I love the look.

  3. You could do it not so much -- I mean...have panels in the door (like 2 squares within the rectangle and a good 1" from the edges)

This doesn't really give you 100% privacy, but is better than having the curtains closed all day - even if they're sheer. I don't know why but that makes me feel claustrophobic!!

  4. Oh -- another thought -- what about a wish list? I know people who make wish list links on their blogs. Readers can randomly send things to them, and the advantage to the sender is that he/she would know what you want. Just a thought.

  5. Asalaamu alaikum,
I have cheap window film in the bathroom, it works well. you do have to get it on right, otherwise there are bubbles, which you can pop and push down. It also shrinks a bit. I'd only use film for smaller windows.
My front windows are lace--right now some lace table clothes I found at a yard sale hung with the rings that just clip to the fabric (easy to switch out fabrics too)and on a tension rod. Anyway. The bolder the pattern the more the eye stays on the lace. The privacy is very good during the day. When the light inside is more than out, you just have to draw the blinds or shade. You can hang a piece with thumb tacks, if you have some lace fabrics laying around, and have the kids check. I also like being able to see outside. Film covered windows would make me feel shut in. If you are lucky to have your windows facing a street (or where no nieghbors are looking down into your living room), you can hang cafe curtains--leaving the top part of the window open to the sky.
Last but not least I had a friend recover sheap plastic roller shades with shangtung silk---oh my lovely. I'd like to try that or do a cut out design on a solid one.

  6. Wish list Heather? Then they would know where you live right? lol Or just the company would know? Sounds intriguing.

UmmMalaak where do you get cheap window film..all the places I've checked online so far are at least $20 a piece.

  8. Hard to know since you are in Canada. But the chain stores like Walmart--the stores that carry "everything" and the chain Hardware stores ususally carry a few rolls of frosted window film. Nothing fancy, not like the gorgeous faux stained glass things on amazon. I got clear film with tiny triangles making a square, a "pressed" pattern, you can feel the lines. A long time ago I lined ALL of our windows in a basement studio, people could see in soo easily. It didn't look bad. My Aunt did the faux stained glass in a stairway window and it looks great.
Anyway, it's the same film that you can cover books with, which is crazy... Look in the shelf liner section? It comes in a roll.
Here is a nice pattern from amazon: Can't find what I have, but has a similar effect:

  10. ASA (I also forgot the salam...what's wrong with me??)

Anyhow -- Amazon.ca or amazon.com both have wishlits that you can set up. I can then purchase the product FOR you, but only Amazon has your address, so no worries about freaky people knowing where you live!!

And the great thing about Amazon's wishlist is that they have a universal "Add to wishlist" feature that you can use to add anything from ANY website onto the Amazon wishlist. I'm not 100% sure how that works...but I've been able to add things not from Amazon onto my list (but haven't yet received anything yet).

Thanks for the info. I just checked my walmart today and they don't have the window vinyl so I guess I will go out of town.

I need a hijab hanger :) I like the one at Ikea it has a lot of hoops... right now I'm using an over-the-door shoe organizer haha, and it's working well.. but does wrinkle scarves since you have to tuck them in
