RIS -Reviving the Islamic Spirit Conference 2010

So its that time of the year again to ask yourself if you are going to RIS and if so if you'll hurry to buy tickets before the deadline (Dec 5) when the price jumps up. I didn't go last year but perhaps this year. I picked up the brochure from the halal meat store and gave it a hug, yes I'm weird like that. I've gone twice before and I really loved it. I have a hard time tearing myself away from the bazaar though because of all the great books. Since I don't have access to any islamic stuff locally I tend to get into a dreamlike state when I'm there and have to force myself back to the lectures.I've seen some people though who go to every lecture and say they have no time for the bazaar. Masha Allah hard core! But what if the information I get from the books, magazines, vendors, charity collectors etc is even more rewarding? I love interacting with all the sellers at all the booths. There is such a wide range of things represented even mainstream things like Habitat for Humanity. If you are going here is my advice, bring a bag or backpack for your purchases and make sure your wristband is on very tightly. One year I lost my shopping bag and never got it back (checked the lost and found over and over again) and the next year I lost my wrist band because they put it on too loosely. I had to buy a new one.

Hope you do come, it would be lovely to see you again iA!
My problem one year was that they put the wristband on too tight! it was decidedly uncomfortable and made doing wudoo' a bit tricky. Now I watch very carefully when they put the wristband on, lol.
We never make it for the entire day, so the bazaar is handy for picking up recordings of the lectures we miss, as they put them on sale pretty quickly. They usually have copies of talks from previous conferences too, so there are plenty of opportunities for catching up :-)
I lived in a wilderness for 10 years, so I understand how refreshing it can be to come to such a big Muslim event. Hope to see you there iA

  4. Asalaamu Alaikum Heather,

That's hilarious! Alhumdulilah that you finally got it. Who was the unlikely doner?

  5. Wa Alaikum Salaam Huda,

I hope that I can go too. I need some spiritual refreshment! You only come for one day? Why not for 3? I never bought the lectures so I have no idea how much they cost. I wish I had bought some though. Maybe I can get the ones I missed from last year. It would be great to see you again too. Should I bring a cake? lol

  6. A fellow convert who saw me grumbling on facebook about the audacity of Amazon to go from selling it for $50 to $499 (and cancelling my order to boot!)

  8. we usually go to the conference eevry day, but only for part of the day. It's a very long day otherwise and the kids tend to get bored and start complaining. They're older now, hopefully that will be less of a prob, and my older dd will have a table in the bazaar this time iA, so we will have a "base" to dump winter coats/go rest when it all gets too much/rendezvous at regular intervals LOL
