Finish off what you already have!

I finally read the book I borrowed from ds1.
This year I want to follow this phrase; finish off what you already have. As muslims we are told not to waste but with so many choices and access to so much we often put things on the backburner and move on to the next thing. I want to make myself finish books I haven't read before I take new ones. Oh this is very hard for me. I think I'm a kind of book hoarder, even though most are just borrowed items. I get greedy when I see books and want to read all of them yesterday! And then I see more books and hear about more books. This is also a problem with food. I have cans of food etc but then I buy more even though I never made the thing I promised myself I would. I know this is a sickness we have in the west where things are plentiful but that's no excuse to waste the resources we have. (I wonder if this is mentioned in Green Deen which I haven't started reading yet). I have to learn to say no to myself and stop biting off more than I can chew. So let's all make do with what we have. I'm sure there are others out there that have the same problem as me. At least I don't buy clothes that sit there with tags and never get worn or buy 100 pairs of shoes even though I only have one pair of feet. I'm only a little bit of a hoarder and I hope to get disciplined before its too late.Use what you have and then move on. If you never plan to use it then please donate. We just sent off some bags to GoodWill. How about you? Do you have any great plans for the new year to use up what you already have?

  1. As salaam alaikum,

No hoarding here, lol. Actually, I have the opposite problem which is that I give away things that I realize later that I need.

  2. I like shoes and clothes. I know it's bad, but I don't think I spend as much as other people. Then again, I should stop comparing myself to others and do what I think I should do.

I do frequently give stuff away, I'm not sentimental about stuff so at least I don't hang on to things, but I think I could cut down on my purchases.

  3. I couldn't agree more with this post. I am the same about books too (wanting to read them all yesterday - that made lol). My amazon wish list for books is almost reaching 200!! : /

I love giving stuff away to charity too and we can all improve inshallah whether it's actually getting round to do said thing or to do it more often : )

That's good but I'm surprised as a homeschooler you don't have more books than you actually use. You must be very organized.

Just think of all the kids who have no shoes to wear around the world then donate instead.

    Asalaamu Alaikum Yara,

I guess I'm not the only one with this problem then. I should have been a librarian!

  5. As salaam alaikum,

Well, some of the books that we weren't going to use this year went out on loan to a couple other Muslim homeschoolers. Also, we utilize the library and read more living books than invest in textbooks as you probably already know.

You must know how it is with a large family though. There just isn't much "extra" money or space to buy "extra" things.

Yes Umm Tafari I do know that but with me the books I mostly have that I keep putting off reading are borrowed books, from the library, the mosque library and from my kids. I'm not really wasting money per se but I just feel that we should use what we have before adding anything else whether it be borrowed or bought. For the books that I buy I usually read them immediately and then lend them to my kids.

  7. Salam alaykom,

I am not like this with books but am with crafts stuff and boxes and hars I tend to gather and try to upcycle. therefore.... I have alot of junk that is junk! LOL. I like crafting stuff but only ever get to half a project and then I start another. Same with sewing and knitting. Inshallah I should finish my to-do list b4 starting anything else!!!!

I wonder if we have this problem because we get easily bored and want to go on to the next great thing?
